“Few education issues are raising more questions and greater interest than that of how the nation should fairly and accurately evaluate teachers and assess their influence on student performance. And few issues are more important. To help better understand how teachers are assessed in this new era of school improvement, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) convened a task force of leaders in education evaluation, research, and policy to debate and share their collective knowledge about teacher evaluation.

The resulting report, Student Learning, Student Achievement: How Do Teachers Measure Up?, outlines effective methods of using student learning as a measure of teacher effectiveness. It provides principles for selecting and using large-scale assessments to evaluate teacher practice. Additionally, it offers recommendations about how the National Board Certification process can be used more effectively to measure accomplished teachers’ contributions to student learning and how those lessons can be shared with the field. The report provides guidance to educators and policymakers about appropriate ways to ground teacher evaluation in student learning.”

ASCD Idea Alert: How to Measure Teacher Effectiveness

From August’s ASCD Idea Alert:

The trend of access to funds tied to the presence of a rigorous system for teacher evaluation is not going to go away. But basing teacher evaluations on test scores alone is unfair and inadequate. So what’s the alternative?

Just in time to solve this problem, ASCD has partnered with Learning Sciences International to develop the ASCD Teacher Effectiveness Suite. This powerful new suite combines Charlotte Danielson’s acclaimed Framework for Teaching with iObservation®, the leading online platform for instructional improvement, to give you the opportunity to evaluate and support teacher effectiveness with a balanced set of research-based strategies shown to improve student learning.

Whether you’re responsible for a single school or an entire district, The ASCD Teacher Effectiveness Suite is a way to bring your program in line with all the key goals of school improvement:

  • Establish a common language of instruction to align professional development, feedback, and teacher growth.
  • Help teachers achieve state teaching standards for professional practice.
  • Empower teachers to demonstrate growth in the Framework for Teaching.
  • Facilitate teacher self-assessment and professional growth plans.
  • Collect data and evidence of teacher growth and development and link it to student learning gains.
